Frequently asked questions

Q. What is clay?

A. Clay is the ground beneath us and the substance of the earth. It is a natural soil material containing clay minerals and when wet, gives us the plasticity needed to mould it into fabulous structures.

Q.What should I make?

A. You can make absolutely anything the heart desires. Get messy, get creative and just go with it!

If you need some inspiration - head over to our social media page's to see all our wonderful wonky creations!

Q. What type of clay will I find in my kit?

A. We love to play with all kinds of hand clays with different colors, uses and textures. Each kit will have an information leaflet you will need to keep handy when firing your piece as they all bake at different temps! Your local kilner will need this info when putting your mud in their oven.

Q. How long can I leave my funky new pieces before getting them fired?

A. Stress less ClayQueens! Your pieces can sit for months and months before they need to be baked. So sit back, relax and take your time.

Your pieces will need at least a week or two to sit in a cool dry place on your shelf to become bone-dry before their first bake!

Q. How and when can I glaze my creations?

A. Your local kiln locations will be able to help you with your glaze as you will need to find one appropriate for your clay.

Your pieces will need to be bisque fired, glazed and then back in the oven for the final cook.

If glazing from home, remember to apply 3 coats and make sure the surface is glaze free as it will stick to the kiln!

Glaze is easy to remove if you make a mistake – simply wipe with a damp cloth.

*watch this space… glaze available online soon*

Q. How do I locate a kiln

A. We have a list of local kilns available on the link below but always be sure to call ahead!

If you have trouble finding a kiln near you, feel free to send us a message so we can help you out!

Helpful Reminders

  • Please DO NOT consume or eat clay
  • Your claybabies will need 1-2 weeks to dry out prior to your first fire.
  • Please avoid mixing clays as they all bake at different temperatures.
  • You can not bake your clay in your ovens at home... They bake at MUCH higher temperatures!
  • Glaze will melt and adhere to the bottom of a kiln when fired so please remember to keep about a 5mm from the surface of your piece and do not glaze the bottom.
